Jayme's October Photos: Days 16-31

While Mendi is in denial that the holidays are just around the corner, I am totally embracing it! I've even bought a couple of early Christmas gifts. As we close out the month of October I can only get excited about the month ahead. And do you know why? The beginning of November means the beginning of Christmas movies on TV!! It's my favorite time of year (drives my husband crazy!) and our DVR is going to be crammed full for the next two months!

And now on to my October Photo-a-Day Challenge. If you missed Mendi's, then please click here. Hope you enjoy my snapshots for days 16-31!

day 16 -- something you wrote
Yes, I love post-its and making lists. Are you surprised that the nail polish was not for me? It was actually a gift. :-)

day 17 -- fruit
I have been loving lemons & limes squeezed into seltzer water. So good and I love the carbonation without it being a soda. The dish is from Target and I got it because our anniversary is October 3rd and I liked that it had a 3 on it.

day 18 -- made you smile today
"Gosh dad, you are embarrassing me!"

day 19 -- letters
This is a little note that hangs in my cube at work. Wes left this for me in my car back almost 7 years ago. I never tossed it out.

**I interrupt the regularly scheduled photo challenge to say that I'm cheating and days 20-26 will all be photos from a Saturday trip (10/20) taken to Charlottesville, VA to visit the Barboursville Vineyard. Wes and I had an amazing time and I took so many pictures that I just had to share.**

day 20 -- 4 o'clock
A day trip to Charlottesville,VA and at 4 o'clock we were eating at The Nook located on the Downtown Mall. It was a beautiful afternoon and the food was excellent!

day 21--calm
Just walking around the grounds at the winery was so peaceful and calming. I can't wait to go back there again although I think my first experience will always be the best.

day 22 -- in your town
This was taken on the way to Charlottesville and is technically not my town but it is a pond from the next town over.

day 23 -- the view from here
The view from the beginning of the rows. They had the most gorgeous roses planted.

day 24 -- weather
A beautiful day with clear skies and lots of sun shining! Cool enough to be considered fall without actually being cold. A perfect day.

day 25 -- people
From inside of the Barboursville tasting room. We sampled so many delicious wines and even bought 3 bottles to bring home! That one dude is giving me the eye! :-)

day 26 -- listening to
Enjoyed listening to nature especially this little stream on the grounds as we walked around.

day 27 -- morning
"Do we really have to get up early...on a Saturday?"

day 28 -- looking back
I ended up not being able to go out for Halloween this year so I took a look back to last year. This was taken by my husband of me. I just had on a devil horn headband and I loved how creepy this looks.

day 29 -- moon
Did not get this one thanks to Hurricane Sandy. :-(

day 30 -- clothes
Just a little outfit of the day snapshot - Old Navy animal print infinity scarf, rust Gap t-shirt, Old Navy skinny jeans and some fresh kicks. I wish I had snapped a picture of my shoes. They are studded high top wedges by Steve Madden and I love them.

day 31 -- whatever you please
Happy Halloween! Just because I'm an adult doesn't mean that I can't enjoy some trick or treating! I got some good stuff here!

How was your month of October? Ours was awesome, except for the end when Hurricane Sandy came and wreaked havoc along the east coast. We hope that November sees everyone get back to normal.

Mendi's 5 Minute Makeup Challenge (eek!)

**We just wanted to take a minute first to say that we are thinking of everyone that has been affected by Hurricane Sandy. She came in and caused so much devastation, especially in the New Jersey and New York areas. It has been heart breaking to see what Sandy has left behind. We are thinking about everyone in those areas and hope that you and your families are all safe and sound.**

And now on to today's post...

I thought this would be an appropriate video to share on this Halloween Eve because I certainly look a little scary at the beginning of this video!  :-P  Jayme did her version of this video a couple of weeks ago and she killed it with a time of 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Will I be able to get a full face of makeup done in 5 minutes?? Watch to find out!

October Birchboxes Are Finally Here!

For some crazy reason we thought the universe did not want us to have our box of surprises this month as our October Birchboxes arrived much later than normal. So you may have already seen what this month held but we just had to show ours anyway. And this time we opted for the special box, Goop, rather than the usual box. Goop is a great resource for lifestyle inspiration. You can go to their website and sign up for their newsletter so you can stay informed on everything from places to dine and shop to recipes and wellness tips.

We received the same box this month and have to say that we are impressed.

To sign up to receive this monthly box of beauty goodies, just click here. If you already receive Birchbox, drop us a comment to let us know what you received!

Friday's Fancies: "It's Tricky (Tricky) Tricky (Tricky)"

Dare we admit that we are children of the 80's? You bet! We say that loud and proud! So when {av} challenged us to create a Halloween costume, we thought we'd kick it old school. Nothing beats channeling a little Run-DMC to have the illest costume of the night. So come on and "Walk This Way" to having an awesome Halloween night. Trick or Treat y'all!

Mendi's October Photos: Days 1-15

Whoa. Hold the phones for a moment, friends...

We're already half way through October. In one more month we'll be making travel plans to see loved ones, Thanksgiving dinner grocery lists and dare I say, the beginnings of a Christmas list. When did this happen?? I feel like the encroaching holidays just snuck up and bit me on my butt. I'm not quite at all ready for the holidays yet, so I'm going to silently just slip back into my world of denial while I distract you guys with my October Photo-a-Day snapshots...

day 1 -- where you stood
On my deck, while waiting for Zoey to go potty before I leave for work.
((OOTD: Madewell scarf, Mossimo v-neck tee, LOFT jeans, Target belt, Sam Edelman flats))

day 2 -- lunchtime
Photo fail. I had a hot lunch date with my hubz that day. Call me distracted.

day 3 -- this happened today
Jayme went out of town for her anniversary, therefore FORCING me to go shopping at lunch. The 50% off sale at LOFT didn't help either. This striped shirt and navy cords came home with me, as well as those burgundy cords hanging in the background. I love a good sale!!

day 4 -- what you read
Catching up on the latest issue of Richmond's own R-Home Magazine while at a doctor's appointment.

day 5 -- shadow
Holding hands with my hubz. (Full disclosure: Jayme & Wes were there too. The four of us had just had dinner, when an impromptu 10pm CVS run was in full effect because Jayme & I needed some new nail polishes. Seems completely reasonable, right?!? And this photo might have been followed by us making animal shadow puppets in the parking lot. True story.)

day 6 -- I'm thankful for...
What isn't there to be thankful for in this photo??

day 7 -- light
A little corner in my kitchen behind the sink where we get tons of light thanks to those two windows. A potted mum, pumpkins and gourds gave the kitchen a cozy fall feeling.

day 8 -- angle
Another opportunity to do an OOTD (these are fun): black Gap moto jacket, LOFT leopard top (similar), LOFT burgundy skinny cords and black ankle booties (similar)

day 9 -- red
I could eat tortilla chips and salsa for every meal...I love it that much. This salsa has become my new fave! I found it in the produce section of my grocery store.

day 10 -- emotion
We're still very much processing the grief of losing our sweet Nugget last month. September was rough...after we returned from our vacation in San Francisco, we first found out that Nugz had a lung tumor, only to find out a week later that she also had kidney cancer that was quickly taking her from us. It was by far one of the hardest things that Chris & I have ever been through together. We know she's in a better place, but nothing can fill the emptiness that is left behind. We miss her so much and hold onto our memories of her tightly.

day 11 -- something close-up
Zoey says "hi everybody, can I lick you?"

day 12 -- on the table
Fall is creeping into every room of my house. My dining room table got a little makeover this past weekend.

day 13 -- landscape
We went to see Argo at the theater on Saturday night (it was awesome!), so I snapped a pic of a landscape while some of the ads were playing before the movie started.

day 14 -- makes you laugh
Zoey does something that makes me laugh at least once a day, but watching her jump off the docks belly flop into the water is always sure to crack me up. She lives for this stuff!

day 15 -- dinnertime
Homemade pork carnitas...mmm!!! I cooked the pork in the crockpot for 8 hours, then added rice, black beans, reduced-fat shredded cheese, fresh salsa and avocado. Finished it off by wrapping it up in a whole wheat tortilla. Delish!! Recipe courtesy of Skinny Taste.

So what have you guys been up to so far this month?? Anyone else NOT ready for the upcoming holidays? I figure I've got a good 3-4 weeks to remain in my current state of denial before it really hits me!!

Mendi

P.S. >> Most of my photos this month were filtered through an app called Tadaa. I've been having trouble with Instagram lately (an error message that says "Please update your Instagram app to continue posting photos"). Have any of you seen this too? I think it had something to do with the recent Apple update. I can't figure out how to fix it. If you can help me out, by all means PLEASE drop some knowledge on me!

October POTM: Pink for BCAM!

We love bringing you guys our Polish Of The Month posts. It's always so much fun showcasing a special polish or polishes (because sometimes two is better than one) every single month. And this month is particularly special because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  We wanted to paint our nails pink in honor all of those who have been touched by this disease in one way or another.

October Polish Of The Month

Mendi's Pick - Essie's I Am Strong
I love the name of this polish alone, not to mention the fact that Essie refers to this shade as a "creamy, optimistic pink." You guys know how I feel about Essie polishes, so it should come as no surprise that I chose one of their four pink polishes just released in their Breast Cancer Awareness Collection to show my support to this truly worthy cause.

Jayme's Pick - China Glaze Heart Of The Matter (United In Purpose Collection)
This is the most gorgeous magenta cream polish I've ever seen. It covered in one coat which was awesome but I did end up using two coats. This pink is perfect to show my support and it just so happens that its a great shade for fall. I hope you guys were lucky enough to pick up something from this collection.

Please let us know if you are wearing pink this month too! It's such an easy way to support this cause. Another easy way to donate is to buy pink this month. So many of our favorite stores such as Sephora, Ulta and Macy's are all behind finding a cure and have an array of products for purchase where some of the proceeds are donated.

Friday's Fancies: Fall is in the Air

The leaves aren't the only things that are changing color this time of year...our wardrobes are too! It was so easy for us to follow {av}'s direction on this Friday's Fancies. The turning leaves are the most beautiful part of fall, so why not lean towards those colors in our clothing. We are craving those rich browns, greens, oranges, yellows and burgundies. We hope you enjoy our outfit and that you excuse us while we go shopping...we need these items in our closets ASAP!

A Weekend Craving: White Chicken Chili

This past Sunday was dreary and chilly here in Richmond, which means one thing...time for some CHILI!! I decided to approach the craving with a twist by switching it up and doing a White Chicken Chili. After a little inspiration from the allrecipes.com app on my phone, I was off to the grocery store with a list. This was a first and a definite make-again, so I thought I'd share it with you guys. I hope you'll give it a try!

Ingredients:
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 medium onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1 4oz can of diced jalapeno peppers
1 4oz can of chopped green chiles
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp dried oregano
1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 14.5oz cans chicken broth
4 boneless skinless chicken breast, cooked and shredded
3 15oz cans Great Northern beans
Monterey Jack cheese, optional for topping

Prep:
Cut chicken breasts into 2 inch cubes and place into a saucepan, then cover with enough water to cover the chicken. Bring to a boil on medium-high heat, then cover and reduce to a simmer for ten minutes or until the chicken is no longer pink. Drain in a colander and allow to cool. Shred chicken into small bite sized pieces.

Directions:
In a large saucepan, heat the vegetable oil on medium-low heat and add the diced onion...stirring until tender. Mix in the garlic, jalapenos, green chiles, cumin, oregano and cayenne. Allow three minutes to cook through, then add chicken broth, shredded chicken and beans. Simmer on medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Just before serving, top with Monterey Jack cheese and then sit back and enjoy!

A perfect comfort food for fall! This does pack a little kick thanks to the jalapenos, green chiles and cayenne pepper, so beware if you don't do spicy.

I'd love to hear from you guys if any of you decide to try this one yourself. It was a big hit with my husband and we had leftovers for days. I'm already trying to decide what recipe I want to try next...if you have any recommendations for me, send them on!

Anniversary Getaway: Baltimore, MD

Last week Wes and I took off in the middle of the week for a little 3 year anniversary getaway. We got engaged in NYC and married in Mexico so we made a pact to always try to spend our anniversary out of town (first anniversary we went back to NYC and the second anniversary we went to Vegas). We had originally thought we'd just stay in town because we had already gone to the Dominican Republic back in July and we have a 30th birthday trip planned for Wes in December. But the hubs suggested a quick and inexpensive trip out of town to keep our pact in tact. So Baltimore it was...

We left on Tuesday and it only took us 2.5 hours to get there. It was rainy but we didn't care one bit. We got up there and immediately wanted to get out and just walk around so we threw on our rain jackets and headed out. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn near Inner Harbor and it was great (pic #1 below is the view from our room). There was shopping (we were right near MAC (and yes pic #3 is the MAC store), J Crew & Anthropologie!) and lots of bars and restaurants around us. We went to Fells Point to one of our favorite spots, Max's Taphouse. It's nothing fancy but we love going there. Don't laugh at pic #2, it's a recreation of a photo we had in Mexico - thanks Taco Fiesta  for the memories! We are so classy!

We had a great dinner out at McCormick's & Schmick's and walked around taking in the cooler night air. We just loved being by the water!

And the next day we got to go to the National Aquarium. For my birthday we went to the Metro Richmond Zoo and for our anniversary we went to the Aquarium...it seems to be a theme with us. We had a blast! If you haven't been then you need to go!

And as it turns out, we didn't need to go far in order for us to disconnect from everything and solely focus on one another. Sometimes it's nice for us to press pause on all the responsibilities that comes along with being a grown up and just have some play time. We had a great time celebrating 3 years of marital bliss.
