Dior "DiorShow New Look" Event & Haul

We had the opportunity to attend a Dior event at our local Dillard's department store at Short Pump Mall this past weekend. This workshop was the debut of Dior's 2012 Spring line called the "Garden Party Collection." We heard that Dior would have a very special guest on hand, their very own Stephanie Guarino, a Regional Makeup Artist who hails from Atlanta, GA, also known as one of Dior's brow gurus. So in the the name of all things beauty, we booked our appointments for a one-on-one consultation. Little did we know that we would have the pleasure of having not only Stephanie's undivided attention on our brows, but also a full face of makeup applied by Dareth Vinson, another one of Dior's wonderful Regional Makeup Artists from Charlotte, NC. Over the course of a couple of hours, we learned more than we ever could have imagined about the magical world of Dior.

In 1947, Christian Dior presented his first ever fashion show in Paris. His collection was fresh and full of color and was a hit. So much so that the Editor-In-Chief of Harper's Bazaar, Carmel Snow, commented "It's quite a revolution, dear Christian. Your dresses have such a NEW LOOK."  And so Dior's New Look has been reinvented every season since.

In the US, Dior is mainly sought after for it's cosmetics, from beautiful eye shadow palettes to glamorous mascaras and lip products to perfumes. However, in other countries Dior is highly regarded as a leading skincare company. Their skincare even ranks among the "Top 2" in Asian markets. They have facilities in France and Japan and have recently joined up with Stanford University for research and development. They have cutting edge technology and formulations that keep them in the forefront of anti-aging skincare.

Here are some photos that we snapped during the event. Doesn't all of the gorgeous makeup just make you want to drool?? The entire experience was amazing!

Sporting our new brows!

Stephanie, Jayme, Mendi and Dareth

The gorgeous bag that each of us left with...you didn't think we didn't buy anything, did you?!?

Mendi's Haul...
Dior Ultra Shimmering All Over Face Powder, Dior Addict Lip Glow, Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum & Primer and Diorshow Brow Styler (plus a free sample of Miss Dior Eau de Parfum and a free gift Dior black patent leather travel bag)

Jayme's Haul...

Love it or Leave it...DiorShow Heat Lash Curler

It's been a little while since our last Love it or Leave it post when we debuted Benefit's sun beam seen here and we are back with another interesting product that is a new release and is a "Limited Edition Sephora Exclusive".  Dior's new DiorShow Heat Curl Heating Lash Curler.  OK, the name of the product seems a wee bit redundant, but on we go!

DiorShow Heat Curl Heating Lash Curler
via

Here's what Sephora says...

What it is:
A heating lash curler inspired by the backstage techniques of Dior fashion shows for lashes with infinite curves.

What it does:
This lash curler can be used on bare lashes to prep for mascara application, or after mascara is applied to thin the mascara formula and perfectly coat every lash for even application.  The results: enhanced lash curve and perfect, long-lasting hold.

What else you need to know:
This curler optimizes the lash care action of some DiorShow mascaras.

Suggested Usage:
  • Before or after mascara application, on dry lashes, move the switch upwards one or two notches, depending on the desired curl intensity.
  • Place the head of the heating lash curler at the base of the lashes.
  • Glide it upward over the lashes, parallel to the eyelid while pressing lightly.
  • Once the desired results are obtained, move the switch downwards to the off position.
  • Wait for the head of the lash curler to cool before cleaning it with a small brush supplied with the curler.
Retails USD - $25.00

So, what do you guys think?  Love this idea or is a regular lash curler the way to go?  We think this looks really neat, but have to wonder if it really works.  The price point on this tool isn't too bad considering that it's Dior, but on the flip side you can get a normal lash curler for a couple of bucks.  And if anyone owns this, please let us know.  We are so curious because there is one member of HLNC that is scared of the regular lash curlers and would totally try this!

Spring Fashion Cravings

Now that we've had our first "real" snowfall of the season here in Richmond, we're officially ready for Winter to step aside so that Spring can make her grand entrance.  Helllllo cuteness...

Hurry up, Spring!!!

P.S. -- For those of you who subscribe to get our e-mails, you may have noticed a few "oops" posts that went out to all of you before we could hop on the blog and delete them.  What can we say? We're newbies to Polyvore and how it works.  Who knew that if you have your blog linked to Polyvore, that it'll automatically publish your set to a new post??  We certainly didn't.  It won't happen again though.  We're fast learners.

One more thing, we thought we'd share two videos that we recently came across on YouTube that have quickly become our favorites.  We're sure you've all seen or heard of the "Sh*t Girls Say" parody videos that have been trending for quite awhile now, but we could totally relate to these and we're sure you guys will too...  (haha)

Winter Besties TAG!

A little irony here in the timing of this video, we are actually getting snow this evening as this video is posting!!

We first saw some Aussie YouTubers doing this video last summer, which would have been their winter, and we decided to tweak it just slightly to suit us a little better.  We figured that we'd wait until towards the end of our winter to do this TAG, so that we can share with you guys what we've been reaching for the most during Virginia's chillier months.  Here goes...

Questions:
Favorite Winter...
1)  Lip product
2)  Blush
3)  Nail polish
4)  Face product
5)  Hair product
6)  Eye product
7)  Bath product

9)  Fashion accessory

Jayme's TAG! 11 Fun Facts plus a Q&A Sesh

Hey guys! Last week you got to learn more about the inner workings of Mendi in her post and now it's my turn. We were tagged by the lovely Aimee at Chronicles of a Dime, who just so happens to be a fellow Richmond blogger, to do the 11 Fun Facts and Q&A Tag.  Let's get started...

The rules:

1.  You must post the rules. (And link up to who tagged you.)
2.  Post eleven fun facts about yourself on the blog post.
3.  Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you've tagged.
4.  Tag eleven people and link them on your post.
5.  Let them know you've tagged them!

Eleven Fun Facts about Me:

1.  I was on HBO. For real! I was in the John Adams miniseries a few years back. You can see me at the end of the first episode wearing no makeup and sporting a sexy bonnet. I was lucky enough to be an extra that filled the spot of Mrs. Hancock. So I got to sit next to Justin Theroux  who played John Hancock (way before he got with Jennifer Aniston) and Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney. It was one of the coolest things I have ever gotten to experience.

2. I have these dance sequence moments in my head where I am just breaking it down like a backup dancer in a music video. And let me tell you... I am awesome. Unfortunately that is just in my head. I do like to break it down from time to time but believe me it looks so much better in my mind.

3.  Speaking of my moves, sometimes my husband and I have dance parties at our house. Just the two of us and either Pandora or we break out a bunch of our CD's and reminisce while in the "club" (aka living room). And yes, alcohol is usually involved.

4.  One summer after I had graduated college, I quit my "big girl" job and went to New York to attend New York University's Summer Publishing Institute. I thought I wanted to get into book publishing but I really wanted to experience city life so I went and didn't know a soul until I got there. The experience changed my life.

5.  Speaking of my love of NYC, Wes and I got engaged there. You guys might know that I love champagne (or sparkling anything really) so Wes took me to The Bubble Lounge and proposed to me there.  It was perfect.

6.  I love elderly people. It makes me so mad when people make comments about older people because I just find them adorable and they have some awesome stories. And they seem to like me too...at least the little old men do.  :-) Because of this fact some of my family and friends found it odd that I married someone younger. Hmm...

7. Speaking of older people, I kind of drive like one. This is strange because I'm slow and so cautious when other people are in the car with me, but I'm a totally different
kind of driver when I'm alone.

8.  I majored in English a long time ago and will openly admit that I do judge books by their covers. I can't help it. It's who I am! Oh and I love chic lit! Boom!

9.  I love movies but will not seek out movies that I know will make me cry. For that reason I am probably the only person who has not seen the movies Titanic or The Notebook. Give me a comedy and I'm all set!

10.  Deli meat freaks me out. Sweaty deli meat...ew! I'll eat it but I'm very particular.

11.  I'm the only person that I know who has been hit with a ninja star. What? Some crazy nut at my school had it and was throwing it at a tree. Here I am practicing my cheers (I was in the 4th grade) with my friends and BAM right in my shin. It hurt like a mother but the worst part is that the blood ruined my new pink and white Reeboks. I have no idea why I remember that part. I have issues.

My Answers to Aimee's Questions:

Q:  What is your holy grail beauty/makeup product (only one!!)?
A:  Moisturizer...thanks mom!

Q:  Do you drink wine, and if so, what's your favorite wine?
A:  Can I get an amen?? I do drink wine and I'm an equal opportunity drinker...Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Cabs, Malbecs...bring it! And don't get me started on the sparkling variety!

Q:  What is your favorite place to buy clothes/shoes?
A:  I buy a lot of my clothes from Macy's, Nordstrom, Target, Old Navy.

Q:  If you won $1 million, how would you spend the money?
A:  INVEST so I'd have more!  :-) And I'd buy some type of property in San Diego, CA, preferably beachfront.

Q:  What is your astrological sign, and do you believe you act in accordance with your sign's characteristics?
A:  I'm a Leo and my birthday is August 20th.  I'd say that there are parts to being a Leo that fit me and some that are nothing like me. I do think that I am confident, generous, loyal, encouraging and social. But I don't think that I am pretentious, domineering and vain.

Q:  Would you ever be a contestant on a dating reality show (such as The Bachelor)? Why or why not?
A:  No!! Please don't hate me but as much as I love a little trash TV I can't stand to watch The Bachelor.  And the fact that I'm married would make explaining that one to Wes a little difficult. HAHA!

Q:  What's your drink of choice at Starbucks?
A:  Trenta Unsweetened Iced Green Tea with one Splenda. Go big or go home! I actually don't drink coffee so the green tea is all I ever get at Starbucks.

Q:  If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
A:  I agree with Mendi...this one is just too hard to answer.

Q:  If I came to visit you in your current place of residence, where would you take me?
A:  We'd go to brunch and have lots of bloody mary's and/or mimosas. There might be some shopping involved... OK, "might" is just me being ridiculous.  We'd of course go shopping and we'd walk around Carytown.  Maybe a cruise along the Canal Walk or Maymont Park...

Q:  What is your greatest strength?
A:  This is a hard one and I'm the type of person that seriously needs like a month to think about this before I answer. What does that say? My husband says that I am honest, loyal and caring. Aw...he scored points (and yes I asked him to answer this one for me.)

Q:  If you could travel to any one destination in the world for two weeks (money is not an option), where would you go?
A:  This is so hard because I want to go everywhere!! I hate to copy Mendi but once I saw the movie Couples Retreat (and yes I have seen it about a dozen times) I have wanted to go to the St. Regis in Bora Bora

Peeps I'm Tagging:
Here's where we're going to break the rules a little. We want to tag anyone who feels like doing this on their blog! So jump right in, consider yourself tagged...

My Questions for YOU:
Mendi asked six questions so I am only going to ask you five. Here goes...
1)  What was the best concert you have ever seen?
2) Where is the coolest place you have ever traveled?
3)  If you could have dinner with anyone, who would you invite?
4)  If there was a movie about your life, who would play you?
5)  What is your favorite wine? I want your recommendations so I can try them all!

I seriously can't wait to hear what you guys say!! This was so much fun and hope I didn't bore you or scare you.  :-) Hope you guys are having a fabulous weekend!

POTM...February Edition

As you know we started our Polish Of The Month post back in August as seen here and we love showcasing a special polish or polishes every single month.  There are so many awesome polishes out there that they really do deserve their own post!  So without further adieu, we bring you...

February Polish Of The Month

Mendi's Pick - Essie Marshmallow and Essie Shine of the Times Luxeffects Topcoat

I've been loving the white nails trend lately, plus I literally can NOT get enough of this Shine of the Times glitter topcoat from Essie (if you haven't purchased any of the Luxeffects polishes yet, I highly suggest that you do!).  I think this combo would also make an excellent Spring/Summer polish choice, but this really reminded me of snowflakes, which is something that Richmond hasn't seen much of this Winter.  There's a chance for flurries this weekend though, so my well-polished fingers will be crossed!

Jayme's Pick - OPI Nice Stems! Collection in Play the Peonies, Come to Poppy and I Lily Love You

It's been all clouds and grey skies here in Richmond so I had to infuse a little color to my polish pick for this month. And with the passing of Valentine's Day I wanted to go pink rather than the usual red. Come to Poppy is the perfect pearly and girly pink. Play the Peonies is a true pearl color with just a hint of pink and is so fun with I Lily Love You sparkle flakes on top. These colors just make me happy.

What polish(es) are you guys loving this month??  Drop us a comment and let us know.

February Birchbox Arrived!

After January's Birchbox set the bar so high (see that unboxing video here), we were hoping that February's Birchbox would keep the trend going.  So without further adieu, here's what we received in both of our boxes...

We were beyond excited to see an Exude lipstick in here (we love anything that Rachel Zoe attaches her name to), but we were rather disappointed that they chose a bright cherry red color. Red lipstick isn't exactly well known for being a universally flattering color on all women and many of us just don't feel like we can pull off the bright red lip trend.  We would have been much happier with a pale pink or nude lipstick, but we guess beggars can't be choosers.  It is a full-size lipstick that retails for $29.  We're going to do our best to make it work for us, by blotting it with a tissue to tone down the bright color and applying a nude gloss on top to bring it down even a little more.  Here's a swatch...

As soon as we saw the Eye Rock designer liners, we immediately knew that we wanted to film a Beauty Battle on these, so stay tuned to see how those work out for us in the coming weeks.  The rest of the box was just 'eh'.  We'll definitely use the nail polish remover pads and the cute little heart shaped nail file is perfect to keep in our purse.  Perfume samples aren't necessarily our favorites to receive...other than the Kate Spade Twirl sample that we received in a box last June, most of the scents just don't hit the mark for us.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Birchbox, it's a monthly subscription that is delivered to your doorstep with 4-5 luxe beauty samples for $10 a month (US residents only).  If you decide to give it a try, be sure to let them know that HLNC sent you.

And if you're already a Birchbox subscriber, we'd love to hear what you got in your box this month!  Drop us a comment to let us know.

Mendi's TAG! 11 Fun Facts plus a Q&A Sesh

Hey guys, it's just Mendi today.  Jayme & I have been tagged by the sweet Aimee at Chronicles of a Dime, who just so happens to be a fellow Richmond blogger, to do the 11 Fun Facts and Q&A Tag.  I'm gonna go first & then it'll be Jayme's turn later in the week!!  So here goes...

The rules:

Eleven Fun Facts about Myself:

1.  I hate chewing gum. I think the whole idea of it is kinda disgusting. I know, I'm a weirdo. I have a constant supply of mints on me at all times though!

2.  I can only sleep with noise, as in like multiple fans that sound like jet engines, yet I wear earplugs at night. Ha! Kind of counter-productive, right?!? You'd think. But for the record, I can still hear my fans despite the earplugs, but when my early riser hubz is getting ready for work at 5am, I can't hear an ounce of him up & about.

3.  I have ZERO (nada) fear of heights. I've wanted to skydive my entire life. It's a bucket list item of mine for sure! My hubz says that I would jump out of the plane with a running start. He's right.

4.  This is sorta embarrassing, but I have a specific pillowcase that I must sleep with at night. The embarrassing part is that said pillowcase is atleast nine years old and it's seen better days. I would insert a picture here, but just imagine rips, holes & a torn off hem. It's SO soft though, you guys. I can't bring myself to part with it.

5.  I skipped my Junior year of high school, because I couldn't get the heck out of dodge fast enough. Obviously I had the grades to support doing so (just sayin'), but I did have to take English 11 in summer school so that I'd have all four years of English credits. It was SO worth it!!

6.  I can burp better than you can. Oh yes, I can!

7.  I know every. single. word to "Baby Got Back"...it's pretty much my "signature song".

8.  I've broken two bones in my life (one from falling off my swing set when I was six years old and the other time while competing in gymnastics when I was fifteen). They were both in my left arm -- my wrist, then my elbow. Poor left arm. Good thing I'm right-handed.

9.  I have a MAJOR fear of being chased. I basically sucked my entire life at any type of game where I had to run back to "base" without getting tagged, because I'd freak out & curl into a ball. Screaming, heart palpitations, the whole nine yards. Oh, and chase scenes in movies where a girl is running through the woods trying to get away from an attacker?? Forget it. I'm hyperventilating.

10.  I have worn contacts since I was 11 years old. Literally, I'm blind as a bat without them, so I hardly ever take them out. Like, literally. Maybe once a month, if I'm good. I know my eyes are going to hate me one day for this. I have glasses. I just can't stand wearing them.

11.  I'm full on OCD to the max when it comes to details and routines. I think this is mostly a good thing. It works for me. Sorry if I drive anyone else crazy in the process. Just trying to keep myself sane over here.

My Answers to Aimee's Questions:

Q:  What is your holy grail beauty/makeup product (only one!!)?
A:  Chapstick. It's an illness.

Q:  Do you drink wine, and if so, what's your favorite wine?
A:  Here's the thing, I love wine (preferably a Pinot Grigio or a Riesling), but wine doesn't love me back. I think I must be allergic to the sulfites in the wine, because about an hour or two after drinking it, I'm totally congested and can't breathe worth a crap. So...I end up popping a couple Benadryl before enjoying a few glasses of wine, which equals me being a really good time. Haha!

Q:  What is your favorite place to buy clothes/shoes?
A:  Question? Am I on a budget?? If so, then I shop at Tar-jay. If not, then I shop at Nordstrom's.

Q:  If you won $1 million, how would you spend the money?
A:  I'd want to build my dream home, which by the way, is nothing like a McMansion or anything. One day my hubz & I want to build a Craftsman-style bungalow on atleast 10 acres of land (I'm not a fan of having neighbors) with a little pond for my hubz & my girls (two chocolate Labs) to enjoy. Inside, I'll decorate it in my favorite style: think French cottage / rustic beach cottage. And while I'm at this dream scenario, I'll also take a Range Rover parked in the garage for me and a mac daddy Suburban for the hubz.

Q:  What is your astrological sign, and do you believe you act in accordance with your sign's characteristics?
A:  I'm a Leo (bday is July 25th). Five words used to define a Leo:
Prideful. Check!
Loyal. Check!
Stubborn. Check check!
Independent. Check check check!
Forgiving. Welllllllll.......you can't win em all.

Q:  Would you ever be a contestant on a dating reality show (such as The Bachelor)? Why or why not?
A:  No, because I already found the best person in the world for me.

Q:  What's your drink of choice at Starbucks?
A:  I'm trying to cut back on the good ol 'Bucks, but I'd have to say a Non-fat White Mocha w/ whip.

Q:  If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
A:  I don't like this question. Next...

Q:  If I came to visit you in your current place of residence, where would you take me?
A:  Well, I wouldn't be a good representative of Her Late Night Cravings if I didn't take you shopping. So we'd head to Short Pump Mall and Stony Point Fashion Park. Other than that, I'd want to take you out for a nice meal...for that we'd go to my favorite restaurant, The Boathouse at Sunday Park, which sits on the body of water that my hubz & I got married on back in April of 2004.

Q:  What is your greatest strength?
A:  I'd have to go with loyalty. If we're friends, then you can count on me to always be there for you. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, if you do me wrong somehow, then you've betrayed my trust and I will write you off easily. I'm pretty much black and white when it comes to loyalty...there's no gray area.

Q:  If you could travel to any one destination in the world for two weeks (money is not an option), where would you go?
A:  Easy...I'd go to the South Pacific.  Fiji, Tahiti or Bora Bora will do just fine. Preferably in one of those overwater bungalows.

Peeps I'm Tagging:
Here's where we're going to break the rules a little. We want to tag anyone who feels like doing this on their blog! So jump right in, consider yourself tagged...

My Questions for YOU:
I'm going to ask six questions of you and when Jayme's turn rolls around, she'll ask five (that adds up to eleven...fair, right??).  Here goes...
1)  I told you what my dream home would look like.  What would yours look like?

Bevello Recap

As most of you know, on Tuesday night we had our Bombshell Bash at our local bevello boutique.  We had some of our favorite girls come out for an evening of wine, girl talk and of course...shopping!  The lovely ladies at bevello, Alden, Teresa and Tenessa, acted as our personal stylists and were so amazing at pulling sizes and options.  We felt like celebrities for the night!!  And they were so generous to offer 20% OFF of our purchases...and who doesn't love a discount?!?!

Because so many of you couldn't join us here in Richmond, we definitely wanted to share pictures of the event with you guys, so sit back and enjoy...

We Found our Sugar Mama!

We're so excited to introduce you guys to a new friend of ours...our new Sugar Mama, Ashley! She's a blogger-baker extraordinaire!! Take it away, Ashley...

Hi there! I'm Ashley from Sugar Mama Bakeshop.
I've recently been getting to know Jayme & Mendi and I'm honored that they would share their space with me.
I mean, how great is their blog!? Obviously you already know, that's why you're here :)
Anyway, I'm so excited to be sharing a recipe with you all and I've been agonizing over the perfect one... but I think I've got it! It's pretty, sweet & keeps well so it's always ready for your Late Night Cravings ;)

I made these the other day because I wanted an elegant Valentine treat but they will totally work year round.
They're also really versatile because you can choose your cake & frosting flavors, mix ins, and sprinkles or icing.
So they can be different every time!
I'm also going to add a stick next time and make them a cake pop.

Everything at Sugar Mama Bakeshop is gluten free & vegan so this is a recipe almost everyone can enjoy!
They're also a perfect party treat but I learned a lesson this weekend:
If you bring hot pink truffles to a Super Bowl party, you'll probably get made fun of.
You'll also probably leave with an empty plate, so... ;)

{Almond Joy} Cake Truffles

ingredients:
-your fave chocolate cake-baked & cooled according to instructions
(you can buy a gluten free/ vegan mix right here)
-1-1 1/2 cups vanilla frosting
(there's a mix for that too)
-about 1 cup of whole raw almonds cut into halves
-1/2 cup shredded coconut
-2-2 1/2 cups vegan dark chocolate chips
-2 tsp Spectrum organic shortening

instructions:
-crumble cake into fine crumbs (easiest way is to use your hands... don't be afraid to get messy!)
-add frosting, almonds & coconut and mix together (the amount of frosting really is a personal preference depending on how you like the texture. As long as they're sticky enough to roll together you're good to go!)
-using a cookie scoop (or tablespoon) scoop mixture onto parchment lined cookie sheet and shape with your hands to make them nice and round.
-freeze for at least half an hour.
-when truffles are nice and chilled they're ready to dip into chocolate! I found that a toothpick inserted into each one was the best way to coat them evenly and finish with a smooth coating.
-Melt together chocolate and shortening and dip away (I would recommend doing this in 2 or 3 batches so the chocolate stays warm and smooth!)
-If you're decorating with sprinkles makes sure you add them before the chocolate cools, if you're using frosting on top (like I did) you'll add that after the chocolate hardens.
-Put the truffles back in the freezer for 30 minutes- 1 hour.
-They keep perfectly in a sealed container in the freezer!
{ps: if you're interested in trying these with vanilla cake, check out my favorite recipe right here.}
Enjoy!
