Hair Envy: Nashville's Connie Britton

We recently saw a blurb online declaring that Connie Britton has "the best hair in Hollywood". Now we weren't too familiar with her (gasp - shamefully we admit that we didn't watch Friday Night Lights) until we started watching Nashville. If you guys aren't watching Nashville then you should give it a try. It's surprised us so much. And the fact that the actors are actually singing...wow! We digress...back to Ms. Britton's hair.

She has a ton of hair and has admitted that it's all hers and that she doesn't wear extensions  Lucky lady because most of us would kill to have her fullness and volume. She's definitely a rarity in Hollywood because as we all know so many celebs wouldn't be caught dead in public without their hair "in". :-) Her natural hair color is a light brown but she has had some variation of auburn or red for years and we can't imagine her being any other shade.

So what do you think? Best hair in Hollywood? Or unimpressed? And let us know if you watch Nashville. Beware the show is packed with drama and can be so addictive! Nashville is on abc Wednesday's at 10/pm ET.

Come Away With Me: New Orleans

We are well into 2013 but with the busyness of the holidays and getting back into the groove, I just never got around to posting about my trip with my husband to New Orleans back in December. It was Wes's birthday trip (the big 30!) and also his first time in NOLA so I was so excited to share one of my favorite cities with him. It was hands down one of the best trips we have taken! If you've been to New Orleans you know that you just can't beat the food, music and southern hospitality.

Day 1 - Friday, December 14th
We flew into to New Orleans and we were greeted with sunshine and warmer southern temps which was a huge change from the cold city of Richmond that we left behind. We went straight to our hotel, New Orleans Marriott on Canal and checked in (we were lucky and got checked in way before the rush of teen dancers who were there for a dance convention). Then we set out to Mother's Restaurant for some great Louisiana food. I'll tell you that the food is awesome but some of the women behind the counters aren't so awesome (think soup Nazi from Seinfeld.) We continued on to Bourbon Street where we participated in lots of drinks and enjoyed some great bands. Oh and there was some mid-day dancing involved (sadly, no pics of me breaking it down on the dance floor). When we had worked up an appetite for dinner we headed to Saints and Sinners which is a new bar/restaurant owned by the beautiful Channing Tatum and his equally as gorgeous wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

Day 2 - Saturday, December 15th
We decided to spend most of the day in the Garden District so we toured around by foot and walked up and down Magazine Street. The Garden District is gorgeous and Magazine Street is known for its antique stores, boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. We had lunch at The Rum House which was insanely good. I'm still dreaming about the mango guac! We hopped on a trolley and rode until we got off at an arts festival in Palmer Park where we browsed for local vendors. And finally I treated Wes to beignets at Cafe Du Monde (a must of you are in NOLA). After a fabulous day out and a bit of freshening up we headed back to Bourbon St for some cheap beer and live music.

Day 3 - Sunday, December 16th - GAME DAY
We showed up to the Mercedes Superdome a couple of hours early as we wanted to partake in the game day excitement. We had great seats and even got some autographs from a couple of Saints players as they were coming in and out of the locker room. If you are a football/sports fan, then you know how big this next bit is...Wes's bday trip, first time in NOLA, first time we were both seeing a game in the Superdome and WE BOTH GET DREW BREES'S AUTOGRAPH! The autograph of a future Hall of Famer. We were on cloud nine. The game was so much fun - the fans, the music, the food, the beer and the win (NO 41 Tampa Bay 0). It gets better...after the game we randomly ran into a friend from Richmond and because of her (she went to high school with one of the players), I got to meet and shake hands with Jimmy Graham (No. 80) as well as a couple of others! It was a night to remember!!

Hope you enjoyed coming away with me to New Orleans (even if it was last month). I'd love to know if you have been to NOLA and what you think about the city. Any recommendations for the next time I go? I'm thinking I need a dose of the dirty south at least once a year!

Friday's Fancies: Back in Black (and White)

We love classic color combos like black and white, but when we think of an outfit featuring this chic duo we immediately think of adding a bright pop of color like red. When the fabulous {av} let us know that this Friday's Fancies would be all about B&W we knew exactly what kind of look we wanted to pull together. So, when you read the question below (What's black and white and red all over?), we hope that your answer isn't "a newspaper" (like the punchline of that old elementary school joke) but that it's going to be the inspiration for your next outfit.

Pantone Spring 2013: Linen & Lemon Zest

We're back today with part 3 of our 5 part series featuring Pantone's Spring 2013 Color Report to showcase the gorgeous blushy-nude shade of Linen and the sunshine-in-a-bottle shade of Lemon Zest. If you missed our round up for Emerald, Dusk Blue, Grayed Jade and African Violet, you can find them here and here. We're absolutely loving the simplicity and femininity of Linen and we can't wait to add some new pieces in this shade to our wardrobe. While we wait out the last couple months of winter here in Virginia, we figure it's never too early to start incorporating Lemon Zest to give that extra pop of color.

January POTM

We love bringing you guys our Polish Of The Month posts. It's always so much fun showcasing a special polish or polishes (because sometimes two is better than one) every single month. There are just so many awesome polishes out there that they really do deserve their own post! So without further adieu, we bring you...

January Polish Of The Month

Jayme's Pick - Illamasqua Viridian
While this color is technically referred to as a peacock green with a metallic finish, I think it fits right into the "emerald" category which is awesome since emerald is the color of the year. I have to be honest and tell you that Mendi pointed that out. I just loved this color because it was a little "holiday-ish" and I had never used it. It needed love and now I'm in love. Great formula and I could have only used one coat. Love this!!

Mendi's Pick - Essie Magnetic Snakeskin in Crocadilly
We absolutely didn't plan to both pick a shade of green for our POTM picks this month, but sometimes these things happen and we just roll with it! I picked up three of the six shades of the new Essie Magnetic Snakeskin Collection recently and I couldn't get this green one on my nails soon enough. Magnetic polishes can be a little tricky since you have to hover the magnet precariously close to WET polish in order to achieve the effect. I'll admit that not every nail came out perfect, but I really like the looks of it. You're guaranteed to never get the same manicure twice with one of these.

OK, now that we've shared, it's your turn. What polish has been gracing your nails this month? Now that the holidays are over, we look for little things, like nail polish, to brighten not only our nails but also these dreary and rainy winter days we've been having.

Friday's Fancies: Crushing On...Happily Grey

Today we're spilling a juicy secret... You see, we have a crush. A guilty pleasure of sorts. And her name is Mary. She blogs over at the eye-candy-loaded blog, Happily Grey. When {av} asked us to divulge our current internet crush for this week's Friday's Fancies, we easily turned to Mrs Grey (that's actually not her last name at all, but it's got a ring to it, no?) for all of the inspiration that we needed. The tough part was picking just one of her lust-worthy outfits to use today. Always a fan of the laid-back casual weekend looks, we chose this outfit to breakdown and send you all out shopping to recreate. It goes without saying that we highly encourage everyone to go over and see what we're talking about...there's just something about Mary.

let her know that Her Late Night Cravings sent you...

Pantone Spring 2013: Grayed Jade & African Violet

We recently brought you our first post (as found here) so you are aware that Emerald is the official Pantone color of the year and that Dusk Blue is hot on its heels. Now we are back with our second installment of our our five part series featuring the colors in the Pantone spring color report. We bring you Grayed Jade (a close cousin of last years favorite mint green) and African Violet. These two colors definitely scream spring and are sure fire indicators that winter will be moving on soon and spring is just around the corner.

Hollywood was on fire last night! Did you see that trail of smoke coming from Katherine McPhee? Most of you probably tuned in for the Golden Globes or at least the best part...the red carpet, but we wanted to recap with you what our favorite looks were during the evening. There were so many exquisite dresses to pick from, so it was hard narrowing it down to just a few. And you know us, we had to pay close attention to hair and makeup, as they are a star's best accessory.

A Weekend Craving: Chicken Tortilla Soup

While we're nearing record high temps in Richmond this weekend, a few weeks back we had a cold streak that led me to wanting to make a batch of soup. It's one of my most favorite things to cook and I've been lucky that nearly all of the recipes I've tried have left us more than satisfied. I received a new dutch oven from my parents for Christmas and you can spot her in all of her bright red glory in the shots below (thanks mom & dad!). I have a feeling that my streak of making soups isn't going to be over anytime soon.

This recipe was pulled from here on FoodNetwork.com and I just slightly tweaked it to work with what I had on hand.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 small onion, diced
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 jalapenos, finely diced (I used sliced jalapenos from a jar)
6 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 14.5oz can of fire roasted diced tomatoes
1 14.5oz can of black beans, rinsed & drained
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 limes, juiced
salt & freshly ground black pepper
1 cup roughly chopped fresh cilantro
shredded monterey jack cheese

In a large saucepan, heat the vegetable oil. Add the onions & cook for 2 minutes. Once the onions have softened, add the garlic & jalapenos & cook for another minute. Pour the chicken broth, tomatoes & beans into the pot & bring to a boil. Once at boil, lower heat to a simmer & add your chicken breasts. Cook the chicken for 20 to 25 minutes. Once the chicken is cooked, remove from pot. When cool enough to handle, shred it & add it back into the pot. Add lime juice & cilantro.

Serve topped with monterey jack cheese and tortilla chips. And if you like a little extra heat, also top with more sliced jalapenos, which we did with the leftovers.

Do you have any great soup recipes that you'd like to share with me?? I'm all ears...and tastebuds.

Hope you guys are having a wonderful weekend!

Friday's Fancies: Wrapped Up in Emerald

As you guys know, Pantone just announced their color of the year and it's none other than the gorgeous emerald green. So {av} is right on point by tasking us to create a Friday's Fancies outfit incorporating emerald. We just love this layered look. Not only are we layering with clothing and accessories, but we are also layering in prints, color and textures and we think we've got a winner here. So we hope that you are also getting all "Wrapped Up in Emerald"!

Pantone Spring 2013: Emerald & Dusk Blue

As many of you already know, Pantone has released their colors for spring 2013 and we think they are beautiful and deserve to be highlighted. So in honor of these ten hot spring colors, we have decided to debut two colors at a time (so 5 total posts) so we can bring you each Pantone color in all of their glory while not overwhelming you guys. Up first is Emerald (this is definitely the most talked about spring color, in fact it's been declared Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year) and Dusk Blue.

Man Style: Channing Tatum

It's been a while since we featured a little "man style", so we thought we'd pick a celeb that has literally been on fire lately (not to mention that he is totally hot!). Channing Tatum had an amazing 2012, starring in movies such as 21 Jump Street, The Vow and Magic Mike. He and his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, opened a restaurant/bar in New Orleans called Saints and Sinners, he was named People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" and it was announced that he is going to become a daddy this year. We can agree that People picked the right man. So this got us to thinking about what he wears when he's not being styled for a photo shoot.  Take a look at what we found...

So what do you guys think? We know he's fine, but how about his style? We like that he keeps it casual with jeans and isn't afraid to wear some of the trends without going overboard. He really does show so many sides of his personality in his fashion choices - he can go from classic and classy to that laid back Channing swagger that we all love. But we do wonder if his beautiful wife helps him pick out his clothes...  :-)

P.S. ~ Jayme got to dine at Saints and Sinners when she was in NOLA and thought that it was fantastic! The food and the atmosphere were awesome! If you're ever in the area, definitely make it a point to visit.
