To Splurge or Not to Splurge: Sephora Collection vs Dior

It's been awhile since we asked you this question. In fact, it's been since last April when we asked you about self-tanners as seen here. But we are back today to find out what you think about this cutting edge product and if in fact you would save a little or spend a little...more. Today we are featuring two lip products that claim that the color of the balm adjusts to your individual pH level to leave you with a customized shade of pink.

Sephora Collection Color Reveal Lip Balm in Unique Pink - $12.00
product image
via
What it does:
Reveal the natural beauty of your lips with this enhancing, color-revealing balm. This unique formula combines a pH enhancer and a moisture booster to create a pretty hue that's all your own, while still maintaining absolute lip comfort. The balm adds volume to your kissable pout and the highly addictive honey flavor will keep your smile delicious.

Dior Addict Lip Glow - $30.00
product image
via
What it does:
Dior Addict Lip Glow responds to the color chemistry of your lips to create a shade that is uniquely yours. Smooth it on to moisturize, add sun protection, and enhance your natural lip color. SPF 10.

We both got to try the Lip Glow at the recent Dior "DiorShow New Look" Event that we mentioned in this post and it did produce two different shades of pink, which we were hoping to see. That day Mendi purchased this balm and has been really happy with the results and the smell (vanilla-mint - the description above does not mention smell). We obviously "splurged" on this one. But what do you guys think? Would you splurge and get the Dior with the SPF or go for the more budget friendly Sephora brand just to see if this type of product does in fact live up to it's promise?

We would love to know your thoughts, so please leave us a comment!

No Cramping Her Style: Jennifer Lawrence

Have you guys had enough of Jennifer Lawrence yet? We haven't! While we have not yet gone to see her in The Hunger Games (boo! hiss!) we have just fallen in love with her. And while she is blowing up the big screen as Katniss Everdeen she is also dominating the red carpet. While only in her early 20's, she looks like old Hollywood when she walks the carpet, whether it's for awards shows or for all of her recent movie premieres.

As Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games
via

Can we say bombshell?? She rocked this Calvin Klein at the 2011 Oscars. We couldn't help but show this photo from last year because that red dress was meant for her body!
via

Calvin Klein is a favorite for the star. She looks stunning in this forest green dress that she recently wore in NYC at an event for the movie.
via

Jennifer looks sizzling in the gold dresses she wore for the premieres. She wore a cut-out Prabal Gurung in LA, a shimmery halter-style by Ralph Lauren in London and donned a backless with gold zippered detailing by Tom Ford in Paris. Is she channeling the "Girl on Fire" look? Hmmm...we think so!
Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games
via

What can we say? She has style (and a great stylist) as she can pull off a multitude of colors, shapes and styles and still manage to look fabulous in everything. The Hunger Games is not Jennifer's first film but it sure has catapulted her to the spotlight and we think she is definitely holding her own.
via
What do you guys think? Is she a red carpet hit? Please let us know your favorite look? We aren't sure we can pick just one!! And what did you think of her performance in the movie? We are planning to see it soon!

Friday's Fancies: Black & Gold

For today's Friday's Fancies link up over at Long Distance Loving, we are holding it down for our local Virginia Commonwealth University Rams. Even though neither of us went to school there, it's exciting to get behind the school spirit encompassing the area in which we live. Last Saturday night, we were both out in local bars supporting our VCU basketball players and coach Shaka Smart in a nail biting game against Indiana. In the end, our Rams came up one shot short, losing to Indiana 63-61. But nonetheless, VCU had a good run and we are still incredibly proud of their trip to the Final Four last year. In true HLNC fashion, we decided to put together a sporty, yet comfortable outfit to represent our team's colors...

Thanks for watching!

2012 Spring Beauty Trends

As we look around and see trees and flowers blooming outside, we know that SPRING is finally upon us. We are absolutely ready for it, but here in VA it's almost like we are bypassing normal spring temps and going straight to summer. But that is not the case for our 2012 Spring Beauty Trends. We are thrilled to share with you today what we have selected. Hope you enjoy!

Purple Smoky Eyes
Smoky eyes are always fun and you can do them in a multitude of colors. Typically the go-to smoky eye is done with gunmetal/black tones but we say mix it up for spring and go with different shades of purple. Purple tones can be softer and a little more playful. It's all about layering the color and mixing pastels with darker shades of purple for a great day or night look! Tarina Tarantino's Jewel Eyeshadow Palette in Fantastical, found at Sephora, is the perfect combination of colors for this trend.

Hot Pink Lips
Red and tangerine colored lips are still in, but there is a new sheriff in town and she is the HOT PINK LIP. She is kicking butt and taking names. Wearing a bold pink hue on the lip is such a fun and flirty way to enhance your look. Matte or shiny...you can do no wrong. Just have fun! Check out the lovely Ashley Madekwe from Revenge wearing Stila's Long Wear Liquid Lip Color in Caprice. Gorgeous!

via

Rosy Cheeks
As we continue on with the natural looking skin theme that hit during the winter, we can't help but mention rosy cheeks. There's nothing that wakes your face more than a soft pink/peach on the cheeks for that oh so healthy looking glow. A slight luminous finish is the way to go. If you pinch your cheeks a bit it's easy to find a blush that matches your natural color and voila...instant flush throughout the day. Both powder and cream formulas will work. Two that we suggest are:

product image
hourglass Aura Cheek Stain in Petal

Givenchy  Le Prisme Blush in Bucolique #2

Cat Eyes/Winged Liner
Now most of us are already on trend with this one, but the cat eye/winged liner is here to stay. It's an oldie but a goodie. For the perfect cat eye, you will need to use a black liquid liner and don't forget to flick the line out and up a little. A quick upward stroke toward the end of your brow will give you the drama that is necessary with this look. We are not sure what Zoe Saldana is wearing in the photo below, but a great liquid liner to try is the Loreal  Lineur Intense in Carbon Black .

Zoe Saldana

Fuchsia/Bright Pink Nails
With brights and neons being so hot in fashion right now, why not carry this trend into beauty and not just on your lips. Your nails are a great canvas to really explore color and even if you are a more reserved person you can still have fun with your polish. This bright fuchsia says pretty, but with an edge and you know we love that! Oh and don't worry, your polish does not have to "match" your outfit or even your pedi color. It's all about mixing it up. Butter London's nail laquer in Disco Biscuit is the perfect choice! It's a spring (and summer) must-have!

via

Bouncy Hair
Miss Olivia Palermo can really do no wrong in fashion and beauty. Her center part with soft bouncy curls is too perfect. When we see this photo we think 1970's Charlie's Angels hair and it has made a comeback and totally works in 2012. Gone are the days when you had to get a perm to get any kind of curl, now you can get Olivia's look with a simple curling iron or curling wand. Be sure to use some lightweight styling sprays and volumizers and always tousle them with your fingers (not a brush). Try a product like Got2b Guardian Angel Heat Protect N' Curl Spray.

Sun-kissed Skin
This look goes well with the rosy cheek trend we discussed above. A subtle bronzey glow that is believable on your skin this time of year can make you look flawless. Select a bronzer that is only a shade or two darker than your skin and get to glowing! This trend goes well with the rosy cheek mentioned above because all you need to do is apply your bronzer first and then apply your blush on the apples of your cheeks. A fresh and subtle glow and so not Jersey Shore-like. We realize that different skin tones require different bronzers but one that we like and is on our wish list is the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze.

Mendi's March Photos -- Days 1-15

This is our first time joining in on the Photo A Day challenge created by Fat Mum Slim, so please be gentle on us if we dropped the ball at all. Do I sound guilty, or what?!?! Haha. It was definitely fun to stop in the hustle and bustle of (almost) each day to catch a photo pertaining to the day's topic. I'm not sure how much creativity I used, but I think I'll get better at this with practice! You have to walk before you can run, right?? Nonetheless, I hope you guys enjoy taking a glance...

Day 1 -- UP
A view of my UPstairs hallway. Gallery wall, painted stripes & book page wreath all done by moi.

Day 2 -- FRUIT
Do my orange flavored gummy vitamins count?? Winston is trying to creep up in the picture. For a little fake bird, he's such a camera hog.

Day 3 -- YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
From my garage. I'll be so glad when the trees start to bloom again. Naked trees are so not pretty.

Day 4 -- BEDSIDE
All of my bedtime essentials. And yes, nail polish is a bedtime essential.

Day 5 -- A SMILE
One of my favorite quotes. So true. Make-up is just the icing on the cake.

Day 6 -- 5PM
5PM FAIL. Sorry, I didn't even think about my photo of the day until I was pulling in my driveway at 6:14. Ironically enough though, the song playing on the radio is one of my current faves.

Day 7 -- SOMETHING YOU WORE
My MK shades...a sunny day staple.

Day 8 -- WINDOW
The view from our table at our "blate"...aka: blogger date. Oh, we forgot to tell you guys about that! We met with four awesome Richmond area bloggers (Chic Stripes, Chronicles of a Dime, Downtown Southern and Simply Sarah) for happy hour and lots of girl talk. We can't wait to do it again!!

Day 9 -- RED
An obvious choice. I wear red daily. :)

Day 10 -- LOUD
FAIL. What can I say, I like my peace and quiet.

Day 11 -- SOMEONE YOU TALKED TO TODAY
Two of my loves:  the hubz and baby girl. We spent a beautiful day in eastern North Carolina retriever training with Zoey. I love capturing the simple moments.

Day 12 -- FORK
FAIL. Hello?? What was I thinking? Certainly I held a fork at some point that day, but apparently my brain was on vacation.

Day 13 -- A SIGN
My first morning Starbucks drive thru run since before Christmas. I gave up my $5 a day non-fat white mocha with whip addiction. Now I'm sticking to iced black tea sweetened with two splendas. Baby steps.

Day 14 -- CLOUDS
Do you guys ever see the tail of a flying jet & wonder where it's headed?? I always wonder if it's somewhere I'd want to go or if the people on board are happy to be bound for their destination.

Day 15 -- CAR
Meet Creamy, that's right, she has a name & she's one of my other loves. With my commute to and from work being 45 minutes each way, Creamy & I spend a lot of time together.

I hope you guys enjoyed going along with me on my daily journey for days 1-15. At the end of the month, Jayme will be sharing her snapshots with you of days 16-31. Be sure to let us know if you are participating in the March Photo A Day challenge, because we'll certainly want to take a look at your pics.

Love it or Leave it...Sephora by OPI

We probably sound like a broken record, but WE LOVE NAIL POLISH!  Do you feel how passionate we are about the subject?  And lots of you who read our blog also share in our polish obsession. We want to share with you today a different kind of polish.  Sephora by OPI recently added a new kind of polish to their already large selection...Betsey Johnson Too Too Scented Nail Colour in It's My Pink.  What did that just say??  Yes, a nail polish that is infused with a perfume.  Huh?

Betsey Johnson Too Too Scented Nail Colour
via

What Sephora Says...

What it is:
A hot pink polish designed by Betsey Johnson and infused with her Too Too Fragrance.

What it does:
This nail lacquer is the ultimate accessory—combining Betsey's favorite neon pink shade and her signature, flirty fragrance in one scented polish.  The bold hue perfectly complements any afternoon adventure or adds a playful pop of color to an evening out with the girls.  Flash your fingers and take in the effervescent, fruity scent with every flick of your wrist.

Retails USD:  $9.50

Has anyone tried this yet or anything like it?  We wonder if the addition of a fragrance changes the formula at all.  And just how potent is this polish?  We would hate for a lovely polish like this to give us girls a not so lovely headache!  Would you guys try this?  The color is gorgeous and perfect for Spring & Summer, but...

We'd love to know YOUR thoughts!

Friday's Fancies: The Luck of The Irish

We're linking up today with Alison from Long Distance Loving for Friday's Fancies. Because St. Patty's Day is tomorrow, this week's theme is all about celebrating the Irish way. Whether or not you have Irish roots doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a great outfit using the color green as inspiration. By the way, we both have Irish roots but bet you can't guess which one has more Irish than the other! HAHA! We were told to go forth and put together an outfit without worrying about cost. Maybe it's the luck of the Irish or one of us stole the pot of gold from a leprechaun, but for this weeks Fancies we didn't have to worry about cost at all.

We've been craving green jeans so we centered our outfit around those. Take a look...

POTM...March Edition

As most of you probably know we started our Polish Of The Month posts back in August as seen here and we love showcasing a special polish or polishes (because sometimes two is better than one) every single month. There are so many awesome polishes out there that they really do deserve their own post! So without further adieu, we bring you...

March Polish Of The Month

Jayme's Pick - OPI Mermaid's Tears & Essie Shine of the Times Luxeffects Topcoat

Spring is here!! This month I wanted to feature a color in the green family since it's almost St. Patty's Day but also wanted to keep it very Spring-like and fresh. Mermaid's Tears is the perfect shade of sea foam green and as you probably know we are still in love with Essie's Shine of the Times. It definitely spiced up this mani and has become a true favorite here at HLNC! If Mendi hadn't told me that I needed it I would have totally missed out! Thanks M!

Mendi's Pick - Essie Navigate Her

In honor of St Patty's Day, I chose to go with a light green. I have plenty of green nail polishes, but most of them lean more toward the olive-y variety, which is more appropriate for fall. When I showed my hubz my St Patty's Day nails, he informed me that it wasn't the "right" shade of green. I let him know that I *might* need to go out and buy more polishes if he kept it up. ;)  In my opinion, Navigate Her is the perfect choice for this time of year.

What polish(es) are you guys loving this month?? Drop us a comment and let us know!
